Challenge

In Lilburn, GA, a nine-year-old wooden boardwalk above a marshy floodplain was facing significant deterioration due to rotting and general wear and tear.

The City of Lilburn enlisted the help of PermaTrak and the Jacobs Engineering design team in order to upgrade to a more permanent, longer-lasting solution that would eliminate the need for ongoing wood maintenance.

Solution

The City of Lilburn ultimately invested in a maintenance-free concrete boardwalk product that carries a design life of 50 to 75 years. The 40-foot replacement pedestrian bridge by PermaTrak - the first of its kind in Georgia - includes a 20-foot beam over the stream that will prevent debris runoff and ease the city’s burden of debris clearing.

The new pedestrian-friendly design is a treasure to the walkers, runners and cyclists of Lilburn, GA, and future boardwalk upgrades are being planned over the next five years.

Mayor Johnny Crist said, "Lilburn residents are very active and treasure the Camp Creek Greenway Trail as the city's most prized amenity. The City of Lilburn will continue to invest in the health of the greenway."
