Project Profile

Eisenhower Golf Course

Challenge

In 2017, Anne Arundel County purchased Eisenhower Golf Course, with the goal of creating an environmentally friendly facility for golfers of all skill levels. Additionally, they aimed to enhance and highlight the course’s wonderful natural features. One of those features, a stream channel network, was in tight narrow channels, and the county wanted to fully integrate them into the floodplain, while also making it a golf course amenity. Lastly, two of the golf cart bridges would need to be designed to accommodate heavier HS-20 (72,000 lbs.) vehicular traffic.

Solution

The only way to open the streams to allow more hydraulic activity was to replace the existing box culverts with boardwalk style golf cart bridges. Rich Pfingsten, the Stantec Project Manager who was hired as the engineer for the project, looked at four different boardwalk options, and they landed on the PermaTrak system as the best option due to its life expectancy, minimal maintenance cost, short construction timeframe, slip resistance textures and the ability to handle the heavy loading requirements. Rich reached out to PermaTrak, and together they came up with a design that would provide the functionality that Anne Arundel County was looking for. PermaTrak has 17 crossings on the golf course, varying in length from 27ft to 130ft, that allow for golf carts to travel through the course with ease. Many golfers at Eisenhower have expressed how great the new course looks and are enjoying all the new amenities.
