Boardwalk Replacement at Camp Creek Greenway Trail - Phase 2

Challenge

Many owners have asked the question, “How can we minimize the maintenance costs on our boardwalk?” The City of Lilburn, GA asked this question when the aging wooden structures on the 4.2 mile Camp Creek Greenway Trail were beginning to cost too much to maintain. According to City Project Manager Kim Conroy, “We were sending maintenance crews out to repair the wooden bridges on a monthly basis, and it was taking a big hit on our operating costs.” The City was getting frustrated, as this is not something they expected from a 10-year-old wooden structure. They needed a long-term fix that would eliminate the need for ongoing boardwalk maintenance.

Solution

The City hired Jacobs Engineering Group to inspect the boardwalks/bridges along the trail to review unexpected maintenance issues. They ultimately decided that PermaTrak’s maintenance-free concrete would provide significant savings in the long run. In 2015, they replaced a 40-foot boardwalk along the greenway. The city was very pleased with the product and as result in August 2018, PermaTrak replaced another wooden structure, this time a 950-ft long boardwalk. According to Kim Conroy, the City is in talks to replace more bridges along Camp Creek Greenway with PermaTrak.
